Hey guys, how's it going?

I've noticed NO ONE has been posting on the blog and it's a little worrying. I know we've all been really busy over the holiday, portfolio and everything, but has anyone thought of how to improve our group film? I know some people have been thinking of inputting their own version/take on it, but I'm curious if anyone else has any suggestions to post or think about?

Personally I haven't of much, but I do have some considerations to bounce around. Wanna hear em?

Here we go! Grab a seat! It's lengthy.

- Let's be Decisive -

Personally I think we have a little too much going on here. So many scenes and even a little too much characters. Just a tad wouldn't you say? Let's focus on the things that work. I noticed everyone loves the triplets, but not much people like our sniper =/

Perhaps we could ...

a) consider replacing or cutting out the sniper.

or

b) develop on him a bit more.

I feel like our gag didn't work because we didn't spend to much time in there, and it could have been presented much better. If we choose to cut him off, we have to think how else the sister can save/humiliate him.

- Let's not be afraid to make big changes-

Okay, I know we're worried about time here, but let's be a little honest. Some of us were not too keen to make changes because we were afraid of the trouble and that it would put us behind schedule, right? I know it's tricky, because we've been spending SO much time on it. However with the time we have now, we can step back and look back at our story with a new mindset( and less stress). If we're declining on changes, let's make sure it's for the right choices to make the film better NOT for convenience. I am perfectly fine with taking a whole new approach if we have to. I don't even care if you guys scrap every idea I tried to put into the film, as long as it is for the good of the film. We NEED to move on and fix this story before we become a Demon Blade disaster lol. ( Nah, we will never be that bad :P)

ANYHOO!

-Triplets-

They work yes? Let's develop them more and make the gags work. A joke can't work if a joke's not funny, so let's make sure they work. Maybe we can even give the triplets a better role and feature them a bit more. We can even take advantage of them by kinda using them as a directional tool to guide Johnny where we want him to be. Heck, guys, we can even use them as a replacement for the crowd/feature them as the main henchmen for big boss if we wanted to. Well, maybe not so much of that exactly but I definitely feel we could use them more.

-Mad scientist-

I don't think we need him. We could establish him better, but I feel like we're forcing ourselves to make room for him when really, we don't need a red team member to control the water wall and blah. We understand ( assuming the triplets are still in the lawn with that lawn scene) that the triplets are there, and people can assume the triplets had set up the water stuff themselves. Heck they look mischievous, who would question that they are capable of being that tricky?

-Sister-

TOO LITTLE SCREEN TIME/FOCUS!!!!

I believe we have all discussed this, but let's have a recap.

The audience felt more for her on our first run.

Second run things went too fast. We got too concerned with time. Sure we need to keep the pace in check, but we have to make sure the sister's role is clear and functions the way we want her too.

If we portray her as annoying, and just 'there' the audience will dismiss her the same way. I think, we should go back to treat her the way we did at first and expand/ develop on that. She was more likable when she was ACTIVE and persistent, like when she tried to be helpful. I STILL feel we are NOT portraying that ENOUGH, especially at the beginning.

It is appropriate. At least I think so.

If there is concern on giving too much attention to her at the beginning, well, think of it this way. It's necessary. At the beginning we need to establish the 5 W's and for everyone to understand both Johnny and Suzy's motives clearly. We kept getting feedback we lacked clarity. Let's fix that.

Here's an idea. Why not use Johnny as a tool to help the audience feel for the sister more? Instead of worrying about developing Johnny's character too much ( well, he's kinda simple, we get it) why not treat him like device to have the sister/Suzy received/ appreciated by the audience. After all, everyone has to cheer for her in the end right? I'm saying ditch some focus or development on Johnny, but I'm saying let's be careful not to over develop and overlook what other advantages we can use.

Mind you, I am still up for Johnny turning all evil/ darker near the end where the audience will end up going " You're a A- hole Johnny!"

Experimenting with the leica reel.

Duuuuuudes,

I like totally took some initiative and experimented for a couple minutes on the totally hot leica reel.

Seriously, though-

On friday, i went to the computer lab with foo and while she was working on her character stuff for DQ, I borrowed the storyboard panels revised by Tony and i edited with drawn over panels and tweaked the timing a bit more. I looked at his revisions and worked on until the rollerblade scene. I didn't save over anything. I put everything with my name on it saved on a different file (so no worries please). I also put the storyboard panels back in the right place .

I have to say... it is starting to run much more smoothly! it's great! He really knows what he's talking about. I only used crappy stick figures and it read clearly and efficiently. I brought a persion to watch both versions and they also agreed it was an improvement. But, just in case you guys didn't approve and don't want it at all, I didn't save over the original file.

I thought it'd be easier to see what would happen if we took all the great criticism on the reel and actually put them on. I took into account other people's advice (that i could remember). I feel that we will have a lot of fun with it because i know i was when we had something to work with.

Mindgasm, really.

(((edit: Thanks to the innovative and talented Nick, he has come to edit our leica and have made it much better. I can only say i was there to supervise, help, and cheer him on. Once we have these great boards, producing the final boards will be much faster so that we won't have tothink too much about figuring out how to make them.)))

Hello,
Here are the script notes taken during the meeting. They are a little jumbled and might seem incoherent at times, but they do have the overall ideas we talked about.

Script

Opening scene, Jonny hits the wall breathing heavily, sees the remaining members of his team defeated. Before he leaves his hiding spot, he gets disturbed by his sister. Annoyed, he turns her around and pushes her in the opposite direction. Show flag within first 10 seconds, have Jonny look at the flag to establish his goal. Showing where he was also shows the rest of the blue team.
Jonny looks out onto the street. The way to the flag seems clear. Jonny steps out only to be ambushed by various members of the red team. They seem to appear out of nowhere and go in for the kill. Jonny rushes for a hiding spot as he shoots down his opponents.

Jonny ducks behind the car, as he lands he picks up a water balloon handed to him and throws it. The balloon explodes similarly to an atomic bomb, taking out most of his attackers. He then suddenly realizes that the little sister is also hiding behind the car and has handed him the balloon. Someone on the red team then taunts Jonny, asking him why he needs his sister to help him. Getting angry, he sends her off before attempting to leave the car. The cowboy then comes around the corner to finish off Jonny. Jonny aims his gun and fires, but his gun is empty. The cowboy chuckles and aims his guns at Jonny, only to be hit by the empty water gun. Jonny grabs the cowboy’s discarded guns and walks off.

He makes his way to someone’s front yard. As he steps on the lawn he sees a water balloon fly at him from the sky, followed a huge number of other balloons. He dodges the attack and makes his way further onto the lawn. Sprinklers then start up, like mine fields exploding. Jonny looks onwards to see the triplets Ed Ted and Stuart along with the mad scientist kid, controlling the switches for the sprinklers. A water balloon will then land behind him, forcing Jonny to make his way through the mine field. As Jonny makes his way towards the triplets, they prepare they’re volley of balloons, but Stuart ends up taking himself out along with Ted. Ed then throws his balloon at Jonny who catches it in mid air. Jonny then lands on Ed’s chest, using him as a bridge to get across the final wall of water, and uses that momentum to shove the water balloon in the mad scientist’s face.

Jonny makes his way to the street to get to the park. Before he can cross, his sister pulls him behind a mailbox, saving him from a water gun shot. A sniper reveals himself as he prepares to fire again. Jonny becomes agitated that his sister had to rescue him and slaps her gun away from her. Fuming, he walks off towards the park, leaving his sister in tears and frustrated. (Shadow appears behind sister)

He crosses the street where he realizes that there is a fence blocking him from the flag. He then hears the sound of tires screeching and a gang of kids appear in a shopping cart. They attempt to fire at him and miss. At this point, the sniper has gotten his shot ready and shoots at Jonny. The shot gets intercepted by the kids in the cart, who then crash into the fence and the sniper tower, taking out the sniper and themselves in the process.

Jonny makes his way to the playground. It looks like a fortress looming over him. We see the final boss, standing on top of the fortress. There is a 2 tier fight between the boss and Jonny. The boss runs out of water and plugs himself into a fountain. Using this unlimited source of water, the boss continues to attack Jonny.

Nick’s ending. Enough said.

I've probably shown this to about half of you guys today but I figured it would be good to throw up here as well. These are segments from a Korean animated film called Aachi and Ssipak. The way they go about doing the fight scenes in this movie is phenomenal and I think they're some good examples of how we can push the action in our own film.

Download the brushes and save them to a folder on your computer (maybe desktop for now, Iunno).
Open photoshop.
Go to the brushes dropdown menu . Click the little arrow on the right.
Another menu will appear - select 'load brushes'. Go to the tree brush set and select it. Fin !

Hey Guys!

Here is my take on the main character and some extras. With all this talk of using the Samurai Jack style for layouts, I noticed that our character designs didn't match that look too much. So I looked up art work by Genndy Tartakovsky (creator of samurai jack, dexter's lab and powerpuff girls) and tried to make designs in that style. So here it is!

Hey team!

Ashley's post seems to be confusing a few people, so I thought I would clarify...

In the end, the consensus was that reading week is for RELAXATION, and there will be NO MANDATORY assignments for the group film over this week. I think maybe a few people were not aware of this, and I would hate to be the cause of undue stress.

That being said, if you WANT to work on the film, Ashley's list is a great place to start. It may be that the bgs might not work with the characters. There's also the issue of a somewhat bland main character, so ideas on how to spruce him up a bit are also welcome.

For those of you who have already done the work - I apologize for the confusion, and thank you for your dedication. YOU ARE ALL AMAZING PEEPS, K?!

Everyone just kept telling me to post up the assignments so i did. I wanted this post to be as clear as possible and not something oddly confusing. But i guess i failed at that. I will now be more careful as to how i post from now on.)))

Sleepless Knights Mission!

1) 3 Layouts
Use the layouts (or make new ones) where the action scenes take place.
You can shrink layouts and then build the environments.
-One real
-One stylistic
-One pushed to the max... or whatever you feel is good

2) Everyone have their own take on the two main characters
-stylisitic? improved? cuter? pushed?
-you can sketch them or put them into your layout cause the style can greatly influence the character/layout.... or you can just let it stand out.

3)Thumbnails for storyboarding.
-This is to see what could work in the story
ie. Sister rambo scene, ultimate sibling showdown, sister training... stuff

Due: Must be posted by Wednesday.
You MUST comment on EVERY artwork. Good and considerate criticism is a very important.

hey guys, we've got some wonderful feedback here. I'm throwing up the ones I found had something to say. Take it all with a grain of salt.

- Make sure to have a clear distinction between the war world and the normal world so that the audience gets it
-Some really nice stuff. I love his fantasy sequences and the 'boss fight'. Maybe try to set up his dismissal of his sister really well, as everything hinges on that. Presentation was super energetic
- Nice simple story, potential for a lot of nice action. The story seems to need some work...seems empty. Interesting idea to distort layouts. Awesome personalities on Red Team. Main character could stand to be more thoroughly evolved. Motivations ? Arc ?
-Great concepts. Energetic. Great pitch. very entertaining. Work on the ending a bit more
- like the story, just make sure to play up the time where he gets shot in the back. Then at the last moment cut to his sister. Play up the tension at the end when he confronts the boss. \
- uniformly spastic. Makes the story kind of boring. I like the idea behind them but they're not all that nice to look at (regarding layouts). Design: I don't see how this is flat and graphic
- It's illogical that if the sister wasn't playing from the start she could come up at the end of the game and beat him. Weak logic.
-make the flag evident near the beginning. Good that he got what was coming to him and didn't just 'earn to help his sister'
- story isn't very capturing, nothing particularly draws you in. May be able to make it work if they can create enough drama during the 'fight' sequences. Color schemes seemed a bit acidic and all over the place.
-nice atmosphere in park layout. Graphic layout would be better without line. Agree with the limited palette comment. Interested to see how you keep the scenes from becoming congested with characters - re: last year's Monster Mash. Try to avoid. More difference in design between red team
-I hope you're good at animating water. Seems like a lot of build up for a weak punchline
-great story, will be cool to see in action, Sister design is great but brother design doesn't match. If all characters match the style of sister design, it would be a great looking film.
- strong message - good in and out of imagination. Good visuals to show when we go in the dream
-Nick is a bit 007. It's a solid story- surprisingly. I was concerned from what I heard, but I'm sure everyone feels that way. The design is a bit awkward. The explanation is a bit excessive. Need to clarify the difference between protagonist/antagonist. The boy is the protagonist and the red team is the antagonist. Emo kid is PRETTY FUNNY. The color work is really, really awkward. I can tell Fraeya's from everyone else's. Nice characterization but awkward design (re: character design). I would SERIOUSLY concentrate on color and professionalism. The pencil sketches that were poorly colored didn't make for a strong impression. The story is strong, however the rest of the aspects need to pick up.

to summarize guys, I think most people had a problem with our designs. Which is alright because that is what our fun-pack is for. Have a great week and rest up, we got some work ahead of us.

The video I promised to post for a while. I also posted a pucca vid just because i felt that, although a simple flash cartoon, it may play useful in the chase and attack scenes. How we can go about them. And how we can incorporate the music. There are interesting yet very simple camera techniques are used effectively. Furthermore, pucca is always kinda in the background trying to follow/protect/stalk/track down garu.

Story Beats

These are the story beats we came up with at Friday's meeting and who is assigned to what beat.

Beat 1 : Introduction
The brother, the last member of the blue team has his back to a wall, seeing that the rest of his team has fallen and the flag he needs to capture is in sight, while his sister is there to help. (This beat intros the 2 main characters, the situation and should tell a little bit about the personalities of the characters)

Beat 2 : Initial Conflict
The brother darts out from the wall only to be ambushed by the red team. They fire at him as he dodges and runs for cover firing back, the water and action very explosive and exciting. (This beat is to establish the blue team as a character as well as set the tone and pace of the film by having a good explosion of action right out of the gate to grab the attention of the audience.)

Beat 3 : Taking Cover Behind the Car
The brother dives behind a car for cover, his blood pumping with energy and intensity, when his sister steps in with him, pressed up against the car with him, breaking his concentration. In the background the blue team makes fun of him for needing his sisters help, mocking him, which gets him angry and frustrated at his sister. (This is to establish the underlying conflict of the brother and sister relationship, that he doesn't want her around as its ruining his mood and making him look bad, while she just wants to play with him and be involved as she looks up to him and just wants to have fun, as well as introduce the color mechanism in which the mood is broken when she enters. EG: The colors and camera go from intense to normal and calmer when shes around.)

Beat 4 : More Action, More Aggression
He dives back into the fray with anger and energy at his side, jumping back into the action more aggressively than before. Hes almost less concerned with getting at the flag and more with making the other team suffer, taking the game a bit too seriously. Examples of this are, knocking over the wheelchair kid, clothes lining a red member with a water balloon to the face, malicious laughter, throwing his water gun at the enemy when it runs empty, etc. (This beat is meant to throw the audience back into the action again, and keep them laughing and having fun, while hinting more and more at how much of a not so great person the brother can be.)

Beat 5 : Sniper
Excited and totally into his fantasy he fails to notice a sniper from a high point (monkey bars for example) take a shot at him, but is pulled out of harms way by his sister who is just trying to help him. She smiles having helped him but his mood once again is broken, having been pulled from his fantasy and is frustrated by this. (This is to reinforce the breaking of mood once again, to help show what the sister is trying to do for him, helping us like her more but also see the effect of her breaking his concentration and his reaction to it.

Beat 6 : Breaking Betrayal
The brother so outraged that his sister is getting in his way slaps the little water gun from his sisters hands, knocking it to the ground and breaking it, before moving off again into the action, leaving her betrayed and sad. (This is the last stray for the sister, not showing her anger at her brother but feeling more betrayed by his hostility.)

Beat 7 : The Big Boss
Finally coming so far he reaches the last stretch to be faced with THE BIG BOSS, a towering big kid with a humongous water pack fueled cannon of a gun that could tear up concrete (in the imagination that is).
(The final conflict beat, the big kahuna stepping out to defend the flag offering the biggest greatest obstacle we can throw at our hero, so that when he overcomes it we get the sense of infinite accomplishment.)

Beat 8 : The Win
Having defeated the giant kid, our hero brother steps to the flag to take his prize. He is filled with pride and accomplishment. (The tone comes back down, his aura of intensity having subsided some so that the next beat can rise above it.)

Beat 9 : Back'splash'
The brother is suddenly shot right before he could take the flag by...HIS SISTER, wielding now a bigger water gun (salvaged from some fallen character) and wearing the red teams colors (full outfit change or a headband, something that won't be accidentally missed by the audience, and the tone and colors of her aura are shifted to more intensity and more towards the red colors, making her look more extreme than he has, the music more explosive, the pose and colors more intense.)

Beat 10 : Cheer of the Rightful Hero
The game now over, the fallen red team gathers to champion the sisters epic win, holding her up and moving off into the distance, while the brother, soaked and left behind, defeated and shocked with sadness. All that built up anger for his betrayal and unfair play biting him in the ass. A voice from the red team mocking him from afar about being defeated by his sister. (The final shot where the audience unloads all the hate towards the character in a mocking laughter, feeling good that the jerk got what was coming to him and cheering the sister on.)

For these beats try and include the core needs of the scene, ask yourself what do we NEED to tell in this so the audience understands and doesn't get confused.

Story Pitch Prep Work

Hey guys!

As most of you know, Nick just sent an Email in regards to preparing for our big pitch on week 7. I'm just going to do a quick summary of the email here.

Now that we have finally gotten our beats pretty well nailed down, it's time to start getting some rough visuals down for them as well as some design ideas regarding characters. Our assignment for Monday is as follows:

- 2 Rough sketches of the assigned Story Beats
- 1 Rough character design of the main characters
- 1 Rough design of a Red Team member (that is not the boss.) OR a rough location drawing (as it will be needed for the pitch package.)

This shouldn't take more than 3-4 hours to do as they're just "clean roughs". We may end up revising them anyways, so don't stress too much over making them pretty lol. As for the beats themselves, I'm going to put them as a separate post since I don't want this post to be too long.

Another thing I'd like to note, is that I will be posting up some of John Nevarez's work and a link to his blog for inspiration purposes in the near future, so be on the look out for that!
